In 1938, Harold Holdway, a young designer in Spode’s England office, was asked to design a new Christmas pattern, especially for the American market. But Howard had never seen a Christmas tree, and was completely unfamiliar with American traditions. In his first sketches, the presents were actually suspended from the branches of the tree, until he was told that the American tradition was to place gifts under the tree, not in its branches!



Despite those few initial setbacks, Harold’s Christmas Tree pattern became an instant Spode classic. Collectors all over the world treasure Christmas Tree for its traditional look, reminiscent of a bygone era. Since 1936, the pattern remains the same – a true Spode classic.
